Welcome to this week’s Wellness Wednesday! 💫

We’re wrapping up our three-part series on discussing mental health and wellness with our loved ones. Today, we’ll focus on how to have meaningful conversations with your spouse or partner about mental health.

Starting the Conversation

Talking about mental health with your partner can strengthen your relationship and provide vital support. Here are some strategies to facilitate these important discussions:

1. Create a Safe Space: Choose a calm, private environment where both of you can speak openly without distractions. This fosters a sense of security and encourages honest dialogue.

2. Use “I” Statements: Express your feelings and observations using “I” statements to avoid sounding accusatory. For example, say “I’ve noticed you seem stressed lately” instead of “You’re always stressed.”

3. Ask Open-Ended Questions: Encourage your partner to share their thoughts and feelings with questions like, “How have you been feeling about things lately?” or “Is there something on your mind that you’d like to discuss?”

4. Practice Active Listening: Show genuine interest in what they say. Nod, maintain eye contact, and refrain from interrupting. Validate their feelings by saying things like, “That sounds really tough.”

5. Be Supportive and Patient: Let them know you’re there for them, whether they need to vent or seek solutions. Offer reassurance that it’s okay to ask for help when needed.

6. Explore Resources Together: If your partner is open to it, discuss the possibility of seeking professional support, such as therapy or counseling, and offer to help find resources together.
