Welcome to this week’s Wellness Wednesday! 💫
As part of our three-part series on discussing mental health and wellness with our loved ones, today we’ll focus on how to engage in meaningful conversations with both parents and senior family members about mental health.
Starting the Conversation
Talking about mental health with parents and older family members can be challenging, but it’s an important step in providing support. Here are some strategies to help you navigate these conversations:
1. Create a Comfortable Environment: Choose a quiet, familiar setting where they feel at ease. This can help them open up and share their thoughts.
2. Use Gentle, Open-Ended Questions: Encourage them to share their feelings with questions like, “How have you been feeling lately?” or “Is there anything on your mind that you’d like to talk about?”
3. Listen with Empathy: Give them your full attention. Validate their feelings by acknowledging what they say and show that you genuinely care about their well-being.
4. Share Your Observations: If you’ve noticed changes in their behavior or mood, gently express your concerns. For example, “I’ve noticed you seem a bit down lately. Is there anything you’d like to talk about?”
5. Encourage Routine and Social Interaction: Discuss the importance of staying connected with friends and family. Encourage activities that promote social engagement, which can positively impact mental health.
6. Explore Resources Together: Offer to help them look into resources or support options, such as talking to a healthcare provider or seeking local mental health services.
