September 2nd, 2025|Mental Health, Support & Resources|

September is National Suicide Prevention Month.

World Suicide Prevention Day is September 10.

MHA Lakeshore works year-round to raise awareness, encourage open conversations about suicide risk factors and warning signs, and provide vital resources.  We also offer support groups for those who have lost loved ones,  and the message that help, healing, and hope are possible.  YOU can make a difference.  Even one caring conversation could save a life.  Here at MHA Lakeshore we offer a FREE virtual QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) on a monthly basis.  This is a virtual suicide prevention training  where you can learn skills on how to start the difficult conversation with a loved one or a colleague who may be struggling.

Here are some practical and helpful links as we raise awareness and share the message of HOPE….not only in September, but throughout every season.

What to do or say to suicide loss survivors (written by mothers from an MHA Lakeshore support group)

On September 13, MHA Lakeshore has its biggest community event of the year, There is HOPE Walk.  This annual event is held in Sheboygan, WI along the lakefront to raise awareness, and offer hope and healing. Here is a brief history of the “why” behind our annual walk.

Twenty-five years ago, Kristi and Doug Luecke lost their son Nic to suicide. Out of their grief, they created the There is HOPE Walk to honor him and support others. In 2005, the event became part of MHA Lakeshore, growing into its largest community gathering. More than a walk, it represents resilience, healing, and compassion.  MHA works to advance mental health through education, support, advocacy, and reform. Participants walk to remember loved ones lost to suicide, to support survivors, and remind everyone that asking for help is a sign of strength. This year marks the 20th Anniversary of the HOPE Walk—an opportunity to join together in remembrance, connection, and ultimately, hope. All funds raised support our programming efforts at MHA Lakeshore.

You are seen, you are loved, and YOUR STORY MATTERS.
