Building Strong School Communities Through Mental Wellness

At Mental Health America Lakeshore, we often talk about “upstream programming.” If you haven’t heard the term before, think of it as focusing on prevention rather than waiting until a crisis happens. It’s about building skills early, creating supportive environments, and making well-being part of a school’s culture, not just its response.

In a nutshell, upstream programming creates a pathway for students, educators, and entire school communities to thrive.

When Mental Health Is Part of the Conversation

When schools create space for open conversations about mental health, everyone benefits. Here’s what we know to be true-

Students are more likely to:

  • Support one another and themselves
  • Feel safe, seen, and included
  • Put words to what they’re experiencing (“name it to tame it”)
  • View asking for help as a sign of strength, not weakness

Educators are better able to:

  • Respond with understanding instead of guesswork
  • Recognize concerns before they become larger challenges
  • Foster classrooms that are calm, connected, and welcoming

These everyday moments create lasting change throughout an entire school community.

Supporting Students at Every Stage

At Mental Health America Lakeshore, our education team partners directly with schools to bring age-appropriate, ESSA Tier 4 Certified, evidence-based resiliency programming into classrooms from kindergarten through high school.  We don’t simply provide curriculum, we work alongside teachers, counselors and school staff to help create learning environments where mental wellness becomes part of everyday school culture.

Mental Health America Lakeshore’s Resiliency Programming Breakdown

K–5: Resilient Classroom Project

Our Resilient Classroom Project (RCP) introduces elementary students to foundational social-emotional skills through engaging, developmentally appropriate lessons delivered in partnership with classroom teachers.

Program highlights:

  • Students follow along with engaging video lessons and teacher-led practices of 10 buildable resilience skills
  • Teachers are offered discussion questions with each lesson, easily tying in classroom occurrences within the school day
  • RCP is currently in 32 schools, being used by 141 educators and impacting over 4100 students

By introducing these concepts early, students begin building a toolkit and a language to help support them both inside and outside the classroom.

Middle School: Roots & Wings

Roots & Wings is an 8-session resilience program, grounded in evidence-based Restorative Practices. Designed specifically for middle school students, this initiative aims to build emotional resilience, develop core social-emotional competencies, and equip students with tools to navigate the challenges of adolescence.

Program highlights:

  • The integrated, 3-part framework draws from Restorative Community Circles, and each session includes a creative art activity, as well as a structured kindness action
  • Our education team co-facilitates lessons, offering teachers classroom and curriculum support
  • Roots & Wings just wrapped up its pilot year, successfully impacting over 150 middle school students in 10 area classrooms

Working alongside educators, our team helps create spaces where students can build confidence, strengthen their sense of belonging, and develop practical tools for everyday life.

High School & Beyond: Student Ambassadors

Our Student Ambassador Program empowers high school students to become leaders and advocates for mental wellness within their own schools.

Students receive training and support as they work together to create a more connected, inclusive school community.

Program highlights:

  • Student Ambassadors equips young leaders with essential coping skills, promotes mental well-being, and empowers them to overcome challenges.
  • Students will lead initiatives that build a culture of lifelong mental health investment by addressing and reducing stigma around mental illness. One example included student created initiatives around teacher appreciation week. They planned events, created appreciation gifts with mental health resources for teachers, writing thoughtful messages and providing a list of mental wellness resources.
  • Student Ambassadors is currently in 8 schools with 101 students enrolled during the 25-26 school year.

It’s not about adding one more thing to a busy school day, it’s about giving students skills they’ll carry with them for life.

Meet the Education Team

One of the things that makes our programming unique is the team behind it.

Before joining Mental Health America Lakeshore, every member of our education team spent years working in public education. We’ve been classroom teachers. We’ve written lesson plans, built curriculum, navigated busy school schedules, and experienced firsthand both the joys and the challenges of working in schools.

That experience shapes everything we do.

A few fun facts about our team:

  • We’re all former public school educators
  • Collectively, we bring decades of classroom teaching experience spanning multiple grade levels, areas of specialty, and learning environments.
  • Curriculum design is one of our greatest strengths. Every lesson is thoughtfully developed to be engaging, practical, and easy to implement.
  • We understand the realities of today’s classrooms, so our programming is designed to support educators, not create more work for them (our mantra is “plug-and-play).
  • Whether we’re co-teaching, leading professional development, or helping schools build sustainable mental wellness initiatives, collaboration is at the heart of what we do.
  • We’re lifelong learners, too. We continuously refine our programming using evidence-based practices and feedback from the educators and students we serve.

You Can Help Us Impact our School Communities!
