At Jackson Elementary School, part of the Sheboygan Area School District, School Counselor Monica Bonestroo is leading the way with a unique and inspiring approach to implementing MHA Lakeshore’s K-5 Resilient Classroom Project (RCP) across the entire school. RCP is a 10-module evidence-based SEL program designed to build resilience in students.

Through her leadership, every student, from kindergarten to fifth grade, participates in an all-school Google Meet, collectively watching the RCP lesson video. This shared experience sets the stage for meaningful conversations in individual classrooms, where students discuss resiliency concepts and explore how these tools can be applied in their own lives.

Monica highlights the importance of this work, stating, “As a school counselor, I know there is a great need for kids to learn these coping strategies and tools to self-regulate because if they are not self-regulated, they are not going to learn.”

Students are not only learning to build their own resilience but are also practicing these skills with peers, fostering a culture of collaboration, empathy, and support. Monica’s innovative strategy to roll out RCP creates an incredible sense of community, demonstrating how resilience can be cultivated and celebrated on a schoolwide level.

Hats off to Monica and the entire Jackson Elementary team for demonstrating the power of resilience every day. Your dedication to student growth and well-being is inspiring. Thank you for helping shape a positive and supportive school environment where every student can thrive!
