Embracing August: National Wellness Month

August is National Wellness Month, a month dedicated to highlight self-care, managing stress, and promoting healthy routines. It’s a perfect opportunity to take stock of our well-being and explore new ways to nurture both our physical and mental health.  If you’ve been watching the Summer Olympics for the last week & a half  like I have, you may have noticed many of the athletes are candid and open about prioritizing their mental health, as well as their physical fitness.   This is refreshing to see, as role models with a global audience.  We win a “gold medal” for ourselves every time we take good care of our wellbeing!

August is a time when many of us may have used extra savings for a well-deserved, relaxing summer getaway.   Or maybe some of us are spending extra this month on back-to-school clothes and supplies, or getting ready to pay a college tuition bill!   Even on a tight budget, wellness doesn’t have to be expensive. Here are five budget-friendly ways to take care of yourself this month and beyond.

1. Practice Mindful Breathing

Mindful breathing is a simple yet powerful way to reduce stress and increase mental clarity. It involves focusing on your breath and being present in the moment. You don’t need any special equipment or a lot of time—just a few minutes a day can make a significant difference. Start by sitting comfortably, closing your eyes, and taking deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth. Pay attention to the sensation of your breath entering and leaving your body. This practice can help calm your mind and reduce anxiety.

2. Engage in Outdoor Activities

Spending time outdoors is a fantastic way to boost your physical and mental well-being. Whether it’s a walk in the park, a hike in nature, or simply sitting in your backyard, being outside can improve your mood and reduce stress. Sunshine is a natural source of vitamin D, which is essential for bone health and immune function. Additionally, physical activities like walking or cycling are great for cardiovascular health and require little to no investment. If you have access to a local park or nature reserve, take advantage of the fresh air and scenic views.

3. Cook Nutritious Meals at Home

Eating well doesn’t have to be costly. Cooking at home allows you to control the ingredients and portion sizes, making it easier to eat healthy.  Plan your meals around affordable, nutrient-dense foods like beans, lentils, whole grains, and seasonal fruits and vegetables. (our local farmers’ markets are overflowing with affordable, fresh produce in August!) Batch cooking and meal prepping can save time and money while ensuring you have nutritious meals ready throughout the week. Simple dishes like a vegetable stir-fry,  grilled veggie kabobs,  and salads can be both delicious and nourishing.

4. Exercise with Bodyweight Workouts

You don’t need a gym membership or expensive equipment to stay fit. Bodyweight exercises like push-ups, squats, lunges, and planks are effective for building strength and endurance. You can do these exercises at home or in a local park, making them accessible and free. There are plenty of online resources and apps that offer free workout routines, from beginner to advanced levels. Consistency is key, so set aside time each day or a few times a week to get moving.

5. Connect with Loved Ones

Social connections are vital for mental health and well-being. Make an effort to stay in touch with family and friends, whether through phone calls, video chats, or in-person visits. Spending quality time with loved ones can provide emotional support, reduce feelings of loneliness, and create a sense of belonging.

Wishing you a healthy start to August.
