August 14th, 2024|Self Care|

As we celebrate National Wellness Month during August, it’s a perfect time to reflect on the importance of self-care. Last week we covered how to take care of your physical and emotional self on a budget, but this week we’ll ask:  but WHY??

In a world that often glorifies being non-stop busy and constant productivity, taking time for ourselves can feel like a luxury we can’t afford. But in reality, self-care is a necessity.

What exactly is “Self-Care” anyway?

Self-care is the practice of taking deliberate actions to care for your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health. It’s about tuning into your needs and giving yourself permission to do what nurtures and replenishes you. By making self-care a priority, we can enhance our overall wellbeing, improve resilience, and live more balanced and fulfilling lives.

Why is it important?

  • Prevents Burnout: Regular self-care helps prevent the exhaustion that comes from overextending ourselves.
  • Improves Health:  That walk you took or the yoga class you attended?  It can boost immunity and reduce the risk of chronic illnesses.
  • Enhances Mental Health: Practices like meditation can reduce stress and anxiety.
  • Supports Emotional Stability: Emotional self-care enables us to process our feelings in a healthy way.
  • Fosters Inner Peace: Caring for our spiritual side connects us to our inner values and provides a sense of purpose.

What types of Self-Care are there?

  1. Physical Self-Care
    • Engaging in regular exercise.
    • Eating nutritious meals and staying hydrated.
    • Ensuring adequate sleep.
    • Regular check-ups with your physician and dentist.
  2. Mental Self-Care
    • Practicing mindfulness or meditation.
    • Engaging in hobbies that stimulate your mind.
    • Limiting exposure to negative news or social media.
    • Setting aside time for creative pursuits: woodworking, painting, crocheting, etc.
  3. Emotional Self-Care
    • Expressing your feelings through journaling or talking with a trusted friend.
    • Practicing self-compassion.
    • Setting healthy boundaries in relationships.
    • Allowing yourself to experience and process emotions without judgment.
  4. Spiritual Self-Care
    • Spending time in nature to connect with something greater.
    • Prayer or other spiritual practices.
    • Reflecting on your values and beliefs.
    • Engaging in activities that give you a sense of purpose and meaning.

How do I find time for that?  I’m so busy!

As we navigate our lives, no matter what messes or stresses we find ourselves dealing with, even just spending 5 minutes each day of self-care can serve as a foundation for making us more balanced.  Do you live by a Google or Teams Calendar?  Schedule in your self-care breaks! Be deliberate and intentional about scheduling time for personal care.   By giving a bit of TLC to ourselves, we can cultivate a healthier self that supports both our personal growth and our capacity to care for others. Remember, taking care of yourself is not selfish—it’s essential.

Be well and take good care.
