History of MHA

As an affiliate of the national organization Mental Health America and in partnership with neighboring affiliate Mental Health America of Wisconsin, MHA Lakeshore provides innovative programming, advocacy, and resources from across the country while connecting community members with the best local support.

The story of Mental Health America began more than a century ago when Clifford W. Beers courageously shared his personal experience with mental illness and mistreatment in psychiatric institutions. His advocacy sparked a movement that became Mental Health America in 1909, helping transform how our nation views and responds to mental health. Today, MHA continues to elevate the voices of people with lived experience, recognizing that those closest to the challenges are often closest to the solutions.
