It can be argued that all great things start small. History proves that movements rarely begin with something big. If you start to dig, you’ll find that often, they begin with someone deciding their pain or lived experience will NOT be the end of the story.

Fast forward to 2026. Two men exchange a paper shamrock in a rural Wisconsin bar. A seemingly small gesture. For a $1 donation, one of them writes a message of hope for someone he has never met before. Just like that, two people that were strangers become united around a shared mission to spread awareness to help prevent suicide.

David Roberts of Manawa, Wisconsin, lived for years with PTSD after being pulled into the tragedy of someone taking their own life; an experience he was powerless to stop. More than a decade ago, he began therapy, later choosing to share his story to offer support and a listening ear to others facing mental health challenges.

“I know what it feels like when that little monster comes out and you need to reach out to someone,” David said describing his own experience with mental health.

That is why David, the proud owner of Sunset Trail Charters, built a new chapter rooted in connection. As part of his healing journey, David began posting messages of hope on his TikTok page to reach those who may be similarly suffering and looking for connection. The response has been incredible. David’s TikTok page reached many people, one of whom invited him to participate in a suicide awareness convoy in Sheboygan.

David was excited to participate, but disappointed that he could not sponsor as the owner of a new company. Demonstrating his resilience and dedication, David began a grassroots effort that is already making a powerful impact. He walks into his local places of business, inviting people to donate $1 to support Mental Health America Lakeshore and raise awareness around suicide in exchange for a paper shamrock.

What began as a simple idea has quickly grown! As of March 25, David reports that he has received donations for 950 shamrocks, including 200 in just ONE hour during a single outing. Each shamrock carries more than a donation. Many hold the names of people affected by suicide, along with handwritten messages of love, remembrance, and hope.

They also carry powerful stories of resilience and connection and the need for more communication about suicide and mental health in rural areas. David’s shamrocks create space for conversations that might not otherwise happen, breaking the stigma around suicide one interaction at a time. In these small, human moments, he is helping others feel seen, heard, and less alone.

“People keep telling me no one is talking about this up here, and we need to be!” David shares about his conversations.

David’s efforts will continue through May 2nd, when he will join the 6th Annual Suicide Prevention and Awareness Convoy and All-Wheel Show (in memory of Nicole Warner). The convoy will travel from Oostburg to the Manitowoc Expo Fairgrounds. Each shamrock will be displayed on the bus and will carry with them the hope and heart of the hundreds David has connected with. His goal is simple but meaningful: to raise $5,000 for mental health awareness and suicide prevention.

David’s story is a reminder that change doesn’t have to start big.  Take one step. Send one message. Ask someone how they are doing. Share your story. Sometimes a movement can be built on connection, courage, and the willingness to show up. Sometimes it can be built on simple moments, like a shamrock and a handshake.

And to anyone that wants to learn just why David is striking up conversations about suicide with shamrocks, he says: “I tell them to get on the bus. May 2nd, get on the bus and come with me to the convoy and see what I’m raising money for.”
